The German artist Paulina Floren (1996, she/they) lives and works in Kassel. Their artistic practice focuses on the interplay between the digital and the physical in the field of ceramics. By using digital tools, Floren explores algorithmic growth that and its transformation into 3D-printed ceramic creatures. This articulates simultaneously a study of shapes of animals, plants and fungi, and tests the material limits of ceramics. They studied Product Design at the Kunsthochschule Kassel where they gained their diploma in 2023. Floren has exhibited, amongst others, at the Kunstgewerbeverein, Frankfurt am Main, International Craft Fair, Munich, documenta Halle, Kassel, and Galerie Ladøns, Hamburg. Their work has been featured by the German Design Graduates platform and Vogue Business. Floren was artist in residence at the Höchster Porzellanmanufaktur/Hochschule für Gestaltung, Offenbach, 2024-2025.
Floren holds a deep curiosity for the development of organic forms as an expression of their role within ecological relations. With a post-humanist attitude, they approach the relation between 3D-animation, 3D-printing, ceramic material and technology, as well as human interaction as an ecological one. Beyond functional or scientific order, Floren approaches the digitally grown forms from a position of care and kinship. The delicate modulation of algorithmic variables, traditional ceramicist technique, and material characteristics results in ceramic objects that develop kinship through their detailed and expressive differences: surface and texture, glazing and size evoke a haptic experience of holding a fragile living creature instead of cold utility. Ecological kinship is evoked by both visual form and haptic experience of the creatures.
